Xterra is relatively new and unknown in the elliptical market. That did not stop them from designing an excellent product when they went to build the Xterra Elliptical Trainer. Many users and reviewers compare the performance of this product to competitors that are priced hundreds of dollars more.

While there some nice features to rave about with the Xterra Elliptical Trainer, there also are some weak points. Read on to find out what compromises were made on this product and whether they should keep you from making a purchase.

Stride

The stride on this machine is a little shorter than what would be considered ideal. Measuring in at 14”, the stride length is likely to make people more than 6 feet tall feel confined. Keep that in mind if you are above average height for a male. Otherwise, you should not experience any serious confinement while working out. In fact, you will enjoy a very smooth motion that does a good job of mimicking the natural stride of a walker or jogger.

The flywheel on the standard model weighs in at 17.6 pounds, and it is possible to upgrade to a 22 pound flywheel. Many users have found that the bigger and more expensive option delivers roughly the same experience as the smaller version. Both flywheel options are relatively heavy and capable of preventing wobble during workouts. This machine has excellent balance.

Resistance

The Xterra Elliptical Trainer has a greater than average number of resistance levels. While many similarly priced machines try to get away with 10, or even 8, levels of resistance, the Xterra comes with a whopping 16. This means that you should have no problem setting this machine to the exact difficulty level that works for you.

Programs

You will find 13 different pre-set programs on the Xterra Elliptical Trainer. There are other ellipticals that retail for double the price of the Xterra that only come with 10 programs. With options for weight loss, calorie goals, heart rate control, custom, and time trials, this machine comes with capabilities that are even hard to find on much pricier models.

Console

The console includes a large 5 x 2.5 inch LCD display screen. This monitor provides feedback on the most common workout metrics, including time, distance, and calories burned. Hand grip pulse sensors make it possible for you to track your heart rate on the screen. Unfortunately, many users find the pulse reading to be inaccurate. Another unfortunate issue with the monitor is that there is no backlight, which makes reading the screen difficult without plenty of light in the room.

Comfort

While the Xterra Elliptical Trainer may have trouble matching the comfort levels provided by some of its more expensive competitors, that is not to say it does not provide a pleasant workout experience. The Xterra comes with oversized pedals and cushioned handlebars.

Oversized Pedals

Assembly and Storage

The machine arrives with some parts to assemble. In order to speed up the process you may want to use your own tools rather than the ones included in the shipping box. Even with quality tools, the process can still take as long as two to three hours. Some have reported that poor instructions also contribute to the long and sometimes frustrating assembly experience.

Storing the Xterra Elliptical Trainer is much simpler thanks to handy transport wheels. Without those, this 112 machine might be a real challenge to move from one room to the next.

Warranty

The machine comes with two warranties. The frame is covered for five years and the parts for one year.

Dimensions

When fully assembled, the Xterra Elliptical Trainer measures 63.8 x 25 x 50.8 inches.

User reviews

The Xterra Elliptical Trainer has received mostly good reviews from users on Amazon. Approximately 40 people have weighed in with their opinion. The average rating clocks in at around four out of five stars, which is roughly average for a piece of exercise equipment.

Many users are surprised to find that the Xterra Elliptical Trainer has as many resistance levels and workout programs as it does. They also comment on the smoothness and stability of the elliptical motion as well as its quietness.

Complaints

Many of the complaints are centered on the assembly process. With many users reporting well over two hours in assembly time, it is easy to see why there are complaints. With that said, this is a one-time problem that should not crop up again in the life of the machine. Some reviewers also have removed a half or full point from their rating because of the poor lighting on the LCD display.

Final Recommendation

The Xterra Elliptical Trainer has many resistance levels, ample pre-set programs, and it even allows users to target diverse muscle groups by offering forward and reverse directions. These are great features for a machine in this price range. The assembly and display issues are enough to keep this model from being a perfect option, but it certainly does offer nice value. It would be a smart purchase for any exerciser six feet and under and 250 pounds or less.

Like most Schwinn products, the Schwinn 425 Elliptical Trainer comes with some nice additional features that can provide users with a good workout experience. For instance, you will find a three-speed fan, speakers, and more. While these features may not make or break your workout, they can be nice touches. Read on to find out if the manufacturers got the basics right as well.

Stride

With a stride length of 18 inches, the Schwinn 425 Elliptical Trainer can provide enough the vast majority of users with a comfortable experience. Only very tall users may feel confined while working out.

Just is as important as length is the smoothness of the stride. Fortunately, Schwinn nailed this as well. A heavy flywheel ensure stable, wobble-free striding that can provide a smooth stride for users up to 300 pounds.

Resistance

There are a generous amount of resistance levels on the Schwinn 425 Elliptical Trainer. You can choose from 16 different difficulty settings, making it easy to locate the perfect level according to your own fitness. Users in excellent shape should have no trouble finding a challenge in the higher difficulty levels.

Programs and Features

There are 10 workout programs that come pre-programmed on the Schwinn 425 Elliptical Trainer. With profile, feedback, custom and quick start options available, it is easy to mix things up and maintain high levels of focus and interest in workout regimens.

As I mentioned in the opening, this manufacturer is known for adding plenty of extra features to their machines. In the case of the Schwinn 425 Elliptical Trainer, that comes in the form of a three-speed fan, built-in speakers, a reading rack, and a water bottle holder. Some of these features have minor drawbacks, but most users will be glad to have them.

Console

An LCD monitor measures 5 x 2.25 inches and displays feedback on RPM, distance, speed, calories burned, resistance, and course profile. Heart rate grips make it convenient to measure and track your pulse.

Comfort

Oversized, articulating foot plates do a good job of providing users with a comfortable experience from the bottom up. Six levelers combine to ensure that the device is well balanced at its base.

The longer than average stride length is also a key factor in the comfort of this machine. Unless you are very tall, you should feel good about your ability to take a natural and comfortable stride.

Assembly and Storage

Many users have reported a long assembly process. If you decide to go ahead and purchase the Schwinn 425 Elliptical Trainer, you should be prepared to set aside at least two hours, maybe closer to three if you are not handy.

Transport wheels make this machine easier to move than it would have been otherwise, but at 150 pounds in weight, it is still a bit challenging to change positions or locations. Storage should not be too hard though.

Warranty

The Schwinn 425 Elliptical Trainer has a five-year warranty on the frame, a one-year warranty on parts, a one-year warranty on mechanical and electrical components, and 90-day warranties on both parts and labor.

Dimensions

The dimensions are 62 x 26 x 71 inches when fully assembled.

User reviews

The Schwinn 425 Elliptical Trainer has not been on the market that long. It came out in 2013. That has been long enough to attract approximately 20 reviews on the Amazon product page. While it is still early, it appears this machine is receiving slightly below average ratings thus far.

The early positive comments have focused on the sturdiness, compactness, and the smoothness of this machine. These comments seem to suggest that Schwinn nailed most of the basic requirements from users.

Complaints

There have been some minor quality control issues reported. Some users have said that they were shipped parts that were the wrong size, or that parts were not included. Fortunately, Schwinn has good customer service and has responded quickly. Other users complain that the assembly process is too long.

Final Recommendation

The Schwinn 425 Elliptical Trainer has some nice additional features like a fan and speakers, but it also gets most of the basics right. This machine is very well-built and capable of delivering a highly effective workout. At its current price, it represents good value for the money.

The Exerpeutic Magnetic Elliptical with Pulse is a very sturdy machine that offers plenty of nice features. Like with most exercise equipment, it is hard to please every user. There are some negatives that users have pointed out. Read on to weigh all the strengths and weaknesses of this machine.

Stride

The stride length of the Exerpeutic 1000XL Heavy Duty Magnetic Elliptical is going to present some problems for many people. Measuring in at 13”, it appears this machine was not designed with tall people in mind. You should look for another option if you have long legs. For people who find a 13” inch stride adequate, this elliptical can provide a smooth and effective motion.

Resistance

The tension settings are a nice feature. There is a consistent progression in difficulty from one setting to the next. The eight options provide users of different fitness levels with a setting that should be adequate. To adjust the resistance, the user simply has to turn a knob that is labeled from one to eight. Some users have complained that it would be better to have the resistance adjustment on the computer monitor rather than on a knob.

Programs and features

The Exerpeutic 1000XL Heavy Duty Magnetic Elliptical comes with a monitor that displays key information like target zone heart rate, distance, time, speed, and calories burned. Sensors are built right into the handlebars to make heart rate readouts fast and accurate.

The computer requires 2 AA batteries to function. They are included in the original shipping package.

This machine has an auto on/off feature that some may find annoying. You cannot turn off the machine, you have to wait approximately 30 seconds for it to shut down once you have stopped your workout. It turns on once the machine is in motion. While it can be a useful feature to prevent worn out batteries due to leaving the machine on overnight, some may prefer to have a manual on/off switch for greater control.

Comfort

The pedals have a ribbed design that is supposed to prevent foot slippage. While they are good at that, they are also good at tearing up bare feet. It is better to wear shoes when using this machine.

Noise can be a big comfort problem for many ellipticals. Exerpeutic 1000XL Heavy Duty Magnetic Elliptical does not have this problem. The quiet operation of this machine will not disrupt listening to music or watching a favorite show on television.

Assembly and Storage

The instructions warn users that it may take up to two to three hours to successfully complete the assembly process. This appears to be a bit high. Most users find that it takes them only about one hour to 90 minutes to get all the parts together. A socket set could come in handy and speed up the process if you happen to have one at home.

This machine can easily be stored in the corner of a room. Thanks to convenient front wheels, it is easy to wheel the machine into a storage position.

Warranty

The Exerpeutic 1000XL Heavy Duty Magnetic Elliptical comes with a three-year limited warranty.

Dimensions

The machine measures 54 x 23 x 63 inches. Its maximum user weight capacity is listed at 325 pounds.

User reviews

The Exerpeutic 1000XL Heavy Duty Magnetic Elliptical has received some positive and some negative reviews from users on Amazon. Overall average rating is out of 5 stars.

Most of the positive remarks are aimed at the sturdiness of this machine. As a heavy duty elliptical, you would expect sturdiness to be one of its best features. People also comment on the relative ease of assembly. This could be influenced by the fact that people are surprised when they finish before the rather high estimation of two or three hours suggested in the manual.

Complaints

The 13” stride length is the biggest problem here. It is going to make this machine difficult to use for a wide range of potential customers. Machines with 16” stride length can even pose issues for taller users, so taking three inches off that number should lead to even more problems. Some users have also complained about the lack of a water bottle holder.

Final Recommendation

The Exerpeutic 1000XL Heavy Duty Magnetic Elliptical with Pulse gets decent reviews from users because of its sturdiness and durability. If you want a heavy duty machine that provides that can handle a user up to 325 pounds, it could be a very reliable workout option.

The 2012 version of the Schwinn 420 Elliptical Trainer provides really nice value for cost when you stack it up against its competitors. It has a lot to offer, including 16 resistance levels, a generous warranty, and a diverse lineup of workout programs. Throw in some nice detail features like a water bottle holder, a reading rack, a fan, and speakers and you can see that Schwinn 420 Elliptical Trainer brings a lot to the table.

While there are plenty of positives, there are some negatives that you need to take into account before you purchase this model. This review has all the information you need.

Stride

Measuring in at 18 inches, the Schwinn 420 Elliptical Trainer has a stride length that should accommodate anyone under 6’ 2” tall. Schwinn ellipticals are known for their smooth motion and the 420 does not disappoint in that regard. With help from a heavy duty perimeter weighted flywheel, this machine is able to adequately mimic a natural walking or jogging motion.

Resistance

You do not have to be in great shape to work with the Schwinn 420 Elliptical Trainer. It has 16 resistance levels that range from very light to very challenging. Even experienced weight lifters should find the right level of resistance to have a challenging workout.

Programs and features

Users get to choose from 10 difference workout programs. Included in this package are course profile programs, custom workout programs, quick start programs, and several other options. If you really want to focus on built-in programs during your workout, you can find another machine with more options. However, the custom program does allow users to create an endless variety of workouts.

When it comes to features, the Schwinn 420 Elliptical Trainer has plenty of nice touches that make a difference in the workout experience. These include in-console speakers, a water bottle holder, an input port for MP3 music players, and a book/magazine rack.

Console

An LCD display provides users with feedback regarding a wide array of key workout metrics. You will find tracking for watts, time, RPM, speed, distance, calories burned, resistance level, and course profile.

Many users are happy to find that the Schwinn 420 Elliptical Trainer has a very accurate heart rate monitor. The sensors are built right into the handlebars for easy access during workouts. Just place your hands on the handlebars to receive an accurate reading.

The only console complaints are centered on the thin lettering of the text displayed on the LCD screen. After all, no one wants to have to squint and lean in to read a display while they are in the middle of the workout. If you have trouble reading small print, this issue could pose a problem.

Comfort

There are several features that contribute to the overall comfortable design of the Schwinn 420 Elliptical Trainer.

The ergonomically designed handles can easily adjust to the height of the user, making it a natural fit for all kinds of users.

Oversized stabilizers prevent wobbling during workouts. Stability is a necessary ingredient in a comfortable workout, and the Schwinn 420 Elliptical Trainer can deliver it.

The best comfort feature may be the articulating foot plates. Pivoting pedals react to support the natural motion of the user. This reduces fatigue and enhances comfort during workouts.

If there is one shortcoming in regards to comfort, it would have to be the fan. The fan does not have enough power to provide an extremely cooling breeze, but it should provide a little relief. This is a common complaint for exercise equipment fans.

Assembly and Storage

Assembly is a difficult process for some users. Considering the heavy weight of the machine, this is not a surprise. It may take at least two people to complete the assembly.

Thanks to the inclusion of transport wheels, storing the Schwinn 420 Elliptical Trainer is easier than it might otherwise have been. One person should be able to wheel the machine into a storage space.

Warranty

The 420 has a good warranty. It covers the frame for five years, the parts and electronics for one year, and wear parts for 3 months.

Dimensions

The machine measures 62 x 26 x 71 inches. It weighs in at a hefty 164 pounds and supports users up to 300 pounds.

User reviews

The 420 gets generally positive reviews. However, the fact that only 39 reviewers out of a total of 124 have given five out of five stars should tell you that this is not the most exciting elliptical trainer on the market. The positive reviews point out that the machine has a quiet motion, delivers an effective workout, and appears to be built from quality materials. However, customers seem to be a little underwhelmed by the technological features. This has led to a high percentage of four-star reviews.

Complaints

The LCD display receives most of the complaints. Users find that the data on the screen is very hard to read. Some users have also mentioned the assembly process as a reason for their negative review. The poor quality fan and speakers have also received complaints.

Final Recommendation

The Schwinn 420 Elliptical Trainer provides a very comfortable and effective workout for most users. The lack of five star reviews shows that it does have some minor faults that may annoy some users. If you are not particularly worried about a poor fan or a hard to read display screen, this machine can provide you with a quality workout at a fair price.

The Sunny Magnetic Elliptical Trainer is a very affordable product that allows users to work toward their cardiovascular fitness goals in the comfort of their own homes. Thanks to the smooth elliptical motion, it should offer you a low impact workout experience that can a significant effect on your upper and lower body.

With some extra features and a track record for reliable results, the Sunny Magnetic Elliptical Trainer seems to be one of the best buys in the under $200 category. Read on to make sure there are no drawbacks that make this machine a bad fit for your unique needs.

Stride

The stride is shorter than what you will find on elliptical trainers in higher price brackets. While it is not impossible to find a budget friendly product that can support a long stride, it can be difficult. Stride length appears to be a common compromise made by manufacturers of inexpensive ellipticals. Even if the Sunny Magnetic Elliptical Trainer might make you feel a little confined at times, it should still be able to deliver an effective workout.

Resistance

The Sunny Magnetic Elliptical Trainer comes equipped with eight different resistance levels that can provide a wide range of workout difficulty. The magnetic resistance system comes with a micro tension controller for highly customizable workouts. Any user should be able to find the exact level of tension and resistance that works for them.

Programs and features

Pulse Monitoring

This machine has a hand pulse monitoring system that allows the user to keep close track of their heart rate before, during, and after a workout. The sensors are built into the hand grips, meaning you can track your pulse while you exercise without having to stop and take a reading.

Safety Features

Anti-slip platforms make mounting and dismounting this machine safe and easy. Some people have trouble getting on or off their exercise equipment. This feature should prevent you from ever slipping or losing control on the machine. It also helps make the workout experience more comfortable.

Console

The Sunny Magnetic Elliptical Trainer has a computer that can monitor key workout metrics. You will find all the information that users have come to expect from exercise equipment monitors, including calories burned, time, speed, and distance traveled. With pulse sensors in the hand grips, the console will also keep you informed about your heart rate.

Comfort

This machine has a reputation for being sturdy and smooth. Not only does this improve the effectiveness of the workout, but it also should provide a comfortable and relaxing overall experience. The seat has not received any complaints, which is relatively rare considering this is a budget machine. Often lower price ellipticals compromise on comfort in general, especially with the seat. This does not appear to be the case with this machine.

Assembly and Storage

Users have reported that the Sunny Magnetic Elliptical Trainer is relatively easy to put together out of the box. There are some screws to install, and some other light assembly, but the process should not take longer than 90 minutes even for people who are not handy.

Ease of storage is one category where the Sunny Magnetic Elliptical Trainer really outshines its competitors. It weighs in at only 70 pounds, meaning it is rather easy for one person to move the machine from one part of the house to another. Its relatively small size should allow it to store comfortably in a small, out of the way space.

Warranty

Contact the manufacturer about warranty information.

Dimensions

The Sunny Magnetic Elliptical Trainer measures 37.8 x 26.6 x 60 inches. It can only support a maximum user weight of 220 pounds, which is quite low compared to other exercise equipment. This is the tradeoff you have to make for getting a lightweight elliptical.

User reviews

Most users seem to find that the Sunny Magnetic Elliptical Trainer is a decent value for the price. They believe that it is clearly not the ideal purchase for an experienced elliptical user, but that it serves well as an entry level purchase.

Some drawbacks are preventing this machine from receiving a high overall rating score from reviewers. It currently has an average rating of out of 5 stars from approximately 180 reviews.

Complaints

The lack of stride length is the major concern for users. Even people who are below average height have remarked that the stride feels a little confining for them. Very tall people have listed the stride length as a serious concern that limits their enjoyment of the Sunny Magnetic Elliptical Trainer. There also seem to be some minor concerns with quality control, including mislabeled parts, missing parts, and damaged hardware.

Final Recommendation

Due to the short stride length, the Sunny Magnetic Elliptical Trainer is not for everyone. If you are below average height, this machine can still present a great opportunity to save money on a quality elliptical that easily fits in your home. Keep the stride length in mind, but otherwise you should consider the Sunny Magnetic Elliptical Trainer as a smart purchase in the budget category.

The Body Rider BRD2000 Elliptical Trainer is unique due to its dual function design. You can use it as an elliptical trainer or as an exercise bike. Considering that it can provide you with two different workout out experiences, the very reasonable price becomes even more surprising.

A budget friendly price on a dual function machine should probably draw extra scrutiny. Any compromises made by the manufacturer to keep the price down may be multiplied by the fact that machine has to function as both an elliptical and an exercise bike. Read this review to learn more about the shortcomings of the Body Rider BRD2000 Elliptical Trainer.

Stride

Stride length is definitely one of the areas that has been compromised. People of average height and above, especially those with long strides, could definitely feel hemmed in when working out on this machine. This limitation only applies to the machine when it is functioning as an elliptical trainer. As an exercise bike, the lack of stride does not come into play.

Resistance

It is easy to turn the resistance knob on the Body Rider BRD2000 Elliptical Trainer. The highest resistance levels should provide people in better than average shape with a sufficiently challenging workout. The machine does come up a little lacking when it comes to extremely challenging workouts for advanced users. Experienced bodybuilders and exercisers find that the highest resistance level is not quite enough. Novice exercisers should find the low resistance levels to be the perfect place to start.

Console

The Body Rider BRD2000 Elliptical Trainer is equipped with a very basic computer monitor. While many exercise machines come with the ability to measure heart rate, that is not the case with the Body Rider BRD2000 Elliptical Trainer. It does, however, allow a user to track calories burned, time, speed, and distance.

Other Features

This machine comes with a fan that provides a steady stream of cooling air during workouts. Most exercise equipment fans end up lacking in power, but the Body Rider BRD2000 Elliptical Trainer seems to have a fan that can deliver effective cooling strength.

Comfort

An adjustable seat makes it relatively comfortable to use this machine as an exercise bike. The user can change the horizontal and vertical position of the seat in order to find the perfect fit.

Assembly and Storage

It should come as no surprise that the Body Rider BRD2000 Elliptical Trainer is uncommonly difficult to assemble. If you are handy and experienced with assembling exercise equipment, this product may not pose any problems for you, but you could be in store for a marathon session if you are not particularly handy. Some users have reported more than two hours for assembly time.

The Body Rider BRD2000 Elliptical Trainer is relatively lightweight. Combined with its easily foldable design, it should be easy to move and store this machine when it is not in use.

Warranty

The BRD2000 comes with a one-year warranty for the frame and a 90-day warranty the covers all parts.

Dimensions

When assembled, the machine measures 36 x 28.5 x 57.5 inches. It has a shipping weight of 67.5 pounds.

User reviews

The 2-in-1 design of the Body Rider BRD2000 Elliptical Trainer has received mixed reviews from users. The majority of customers claim that the machine is a good value for the money. These users commonly cite the machine’s quiet and smooth operation, its versatility, and its affordability as the biggest positives.

With an overall average rating of only out of 5 stars, it is clear that some users have complaints.

Complaints

A few users reported that their Body Rider BRD2000 Elliptical Trainer suffered a malfunction of one kind or another within the first few months of use. In one case it was that the monitor stopped working, and in another it was an issue with parts breaking down. This does not seem to be a widespread problem, but it is something to keep in mind.

The most common complaints are directed at the stride length and the wobbliness of the machine. Both of these issues can have an impact on your enjoyment of the Body Rider BRD2000 Elliptical Trainer. It is wise to keep potential issues like this in mind as you weight the pros and cons of other devices.

Final Recommendation

This is not a high quality machine with tons of features to keep the user interested. To get that kind of product you will have to pay significantly more. If you are willing to compromise on sturdiness and stride length, which may not be an issue at all if you are a smaller man or woman, then the Body Rider BRD2000 Elliptical Trainer can allow you the convenience of a 2-in-1 design in an affordable package.

The Gazelle Edge, an arc trainer from champion bodybuilder Tony Little, focuses on muscle toning, weight loss, and cardiovascular exercise. There are several models of the Gazelle, with the Edge being the lightest and least expensive of the bunch. It does not come with extra features that you can find on some of the other versions, including water bottle holders and heavier tubing.

If you want to fully investigate whether the Gazelle Edge appropriately balances economy with effectiveness, just read this review. We will help you weigh all the key pros and cons.

Stride

The whole premise of this product is that its patented gliding motion is capable of working muscles in the both the lower and upper body while also positively influencing cardiovascular endurance and burning calories. Striding in the Gazelle Edge is quiet, smooth, and stable. The core that makes this arc trainer tick is the dual-action split suspension. It supports a full range of exercises, including slow walking all the way up to running. Pressure is relieved from the joints, and the overall low impact experience should be suited to people of all ages and fitness levels.

Resistance

The Gazelle Edge provides users with three varying options when it comes to hands placement. Gripping the trainer at high, medium, or low provides users with different difficulty levels that lead to different results in the upper body muscle group. However, this model does not come with an adjustable resistance feature.

Comfort

Non-skid foot platforms on the Gazelle Edge are designed with extra width. This should provide users with added stability during workouts at all intensity levels. For added comfort in the grip, the handlebars have been covered with dense foam that will stand up to long periods of use.

Programs and Features

The Gazelle Edge comes equipped with a five-function computer that tracks some key data that users can utilize to improve their workouts. This easy to use, battery-operated computer track distance, time, speed, and approximate calories burned. It can provide instant feedback on the results of the workout.

The Edge is designed to be a basic machine. Unlike many high end ellipticals, there is no heart monitor and there are no training programs that come built in. Education training information is included in the manual, but users are expected to purchase Tony Little’s exercise videos separately in order to learn more about training regimens designed specifically for the Gazelle Edge.

Assembly and Storage

With only a few moving parts, assembly of the Gazelle Edge is simple and quick. The instructions are clear and to the point.

The foldable footprint design is perfect for easy storage. Just fold the machine into a flat position and it should be easy to find an appropriate location for storage. It should have no problem standing up in a closet or sliding under a bed.

Dimensions

The dimensions are 43 x 28 x 53.8 inches. The rolled steel frame is 1.5 inches in diameter, making it a very sturdy and durable design. Out of the box weight is 42 pounds.

User Reviews

Most comparably priced — and even some from the higher price bracket — ellipticals receive low satisfaction and reliability ratings from users. However, in general, the Gazelle Edge has consistently received positive reviews from customers. That does not mean that some have not voiced concerns.

Any Complaints?

First, the Gazelle Edge is marketed as an elliptical, which seems inaccurate due to the fact that the feet of a user are not guided in an elliptical path. It is more of an arc trainer. However, that does not make it any less effective.

Some users have reported squeaky parts. In most cases, this should easily be cleared up with the application of Vaseline. The lack of fluidity in the movement in this trainer is another common concern. However, it should be noted that a little loss in fluidity should be expected for such an economical trainer.

Final Recommendation

With a price tag of just over $100, this is a no frills exercise machine that simply provides a quality, budget-friendly workout at home. Cheap ellipticals may provide users with jerky, uncomfortable motions, but the Gazelle Edge generally avoids that pitfall. It is durable and sturdy and provides a reasonable facsimile of the higher priced products on the market. A wise investment for someone starting out with training regimens that focus on cardiovascular endurance, calorie burning, or on working out muscles.

The Horizon Fitness EX-59 elliptical trainer is closely related to the higher priced EX-69-2 and EX-79. You should expect the EX-59 to possess many of the same fine qualities that are found in these other two models. This line of products is renowned for excellent construction quality, effective workouts, and diverse features and programs. One of the few compromises made by the more economical Horizon Fitness EX-59 elliptical trainer is the lack of an incline feature.

Stride

Most trainers in this price range are equipped with an 18 inch stride. This also is the case for the Horizon Fitness EX-59. Extremely tall individuals may need to look for a trainer in a higher price bracket in order to find sufficient stride length, but the EX-59 can provide a smooth and comfortable motion for the vast majority of people.

The long stride and pivoting foot plates accurately match your natural motion for more comfort and less recovery time.

Comfort

Comfort is maintained throughout all intensity levels, from a slow walk all the way up to all out running. The smooth performance is made possible by the 14.3 inch flywheel. While the Horizon Fitness EX-59 elliptical trainer does not have the heavy duty flywheel that pricier models have, the difference in smoothness and comfort does not justify the difference in price. The EX-59 provides good value when it comes to comfort.

As with every Horizon elliptical trainer, this model was designed with to meet a patented SixStar Certification criteria that maximizes comfort for the user. This criteria:

Eliminates stress on the back and hips by finding ideal placement of pedals

Provides easy mount and dismount by maintaining a 10-inch step on/off

Utilizes optimal handlebar spacing to accommodate users of all sizes

Introduces StraightUP body posture to promote an upright position that minimizes fatigue and makes workouts more effective

Ensures a more natural elliptical stride with the 18 inch FLATellipse.

Achieves maximum workout efficiency thanks to a large drive pulley

Optimal handlebar spacing puts grips within ideal reach and distance for both small and large-framed users.

Resistance

The Horizon Fitness EX-59 elliptical trainer has 10 different resistance levels for the user to choose from. People who starting off out of shape may want to begin in the low intensity range, but anyone can work their way all the way up to very high levels of resistance that could meet the needs of any exerciser. In fact, the highest setting would be a challenge even for people in the best shape.

Programs and Features

The number 10 crops up again in the discussion of programs and features. The Horizon Fitness EX-59 is equipped with 10 different fitness programs that cover a wide range of topics. They combine to add variety and effectiveness to workouts while keeping user engaged and motivated.

The EX-59 console features 10 program options with on-the-fly adjustments.

Programs include three targets (time, calories, and distance) and four workouts (reverse, hills, weight loss, train, and custom). It is possible to edit targets and workouts on the fly, changing your resistance levels as you go without any need to disrupt the flow of your workout.

Assembly and Storage

Most people will find that they need help to assemble the EX-59 because of its heavy weight. Thanks to the inclusion of built-in wheels it is easy to move the EX-59 once it has been assembled. Sliding it into a convenient storage space should not be difficult for one person.

Warranty

The Horizon Fitness EX-59 elliptical trainer comes with a fine warranty that is better than most. The frame is covered for life, the brake for 20 years, and parts and labor are each covered for one year.

Dimensions

The Horizon Fitness EX-59 elliptical trainer measures 73 x 22 x 65 inches and weighs 178 pounds.

User Reviews

Like most Horizon elliptical trainers, the EX-59 model has been rated highly by consumers. Almost 85 percent of the users who have reviewed this trainer on Amazon have awarded with either four or five points out of five. This adds up to an overall rating of 4.3 stars out of 5.

Reviews have highlighted the EX-59’s quiet, smooth operation as well as its comfort. Ease of assembly is another key factor that motivated users to write positive reviews.

Any Complaints?

There are always at least a few minor complaints even for an otherwise highly rated product. In this case, the concerns have to do with the ease of use of the computer console and the overly loud beeping sound made by buttons on the machine. Some other users have voiced dissatisfaction over the lack of an on/off switch (the machine powers itself down after a couple minutes), while other taller reviewers reported that the they could not complete a full stride.

Final Recommendation

The positives definitely outweigh the negatives when it comes to the Horizon Fitness EX-59 elliptical trainer. It is a reasonably priced machine that possesses many of the same fine qualities that belong to much more expensive models. As long as you are not extremely tall, this elliptical should provide you with a very effective workout experience for a very fair price.

The Schwinn 430 elliptical trainer is very similar to the popular Schwinn 431 model. However, according to user reviews, there are a few key differences that may have an impact on the level of enjoyment you will get out of the Schwinn 431. If you are deciding whether to invest in the 431 or another elliptical trainer in this category, make sure you read the rest of this review to properly weigh the pros and cons.

It appears that Schwinn listened to the minor complaints that customers have voiced about previous models. Earlier Schwinn ellipticals have sold well, but users had some things they wanted to see improved. Enter the Schwinn 430 elliptical trainer.

Stride

The Schwinn 430 elliptical trainer has a stride of 18 inches, which happens to be right around the average length for machines in this price range. As is usually the case, people who are well above average height may struggle to complete a natural motion. These people may need to look for a longer stride in a pricier elliptical.

Resistance

You will find 16 different resistance settings on the Schwinn 430 elliptical trainer. Adjusting resistance is as simple as turning the adjustment knob. The higher levels of resistance will offer people in tip-top shape an extremely challenging workout, while the lower levels are perfect for people just starting out with new fitness routines.

Comfort

For most, the stride on this machine will be smooth and natural. This is all thanks to the heavy duty flywheel that comes included. With this above average weight flywheel in place, the machine should not have a problem with wobbling during workouts.

Special pivoting foot plates also help improve the comfort factor of the Schwinn 430 elliptical trainer. These articulating foot plates pivot to provide support to the natural motion of a user. This provides added comfort while reducing the effect of fatigue.

Programs and Features

Users will be excited to find a decent range of workout programs included with the Schwinn 430 elliptical trainer. While it does not the most extensive list of programs you will find on an elliptical, the eight included provide a nice range of workout styles.

These programs combine to provide users with varied and effective workouts. They also can provide extra fun and motivation while working toward fitness goals. After all, monotony is one of the most reported reasons for giving up on a workout routine. These programs should keep things interesting enough to ensure that you stay on track.

Console

The console displays most of the important data that an exerciser might want to know. As you work out, you will be able to track calories burned, distance traveled, speed, watts, RPM, time, and more.

Heart rate sensors in the handlebars also help the console track that important metric for you. Unlike most ellipticals, this heart rate sensor has been found to be highly accurate.

Assembly and Storage

The instruction manual is clear and concise, making assembly of the Schwinn 430 elliptical trainer relatively easy. All the tools necessary for the job are included in the box. Be prepared to devote a little time to this process, though, because many users have reported around two to three hours of assembly time.

You might expect this trainer to be extra difficult to move, but that is not the case. Transport wheels are included to make moving the elliptical into a storage spot fairly easy.

Warranty

The Schwinn 430 elliptical trainer comes with an excellent warranty. The frame is covered for 15 years; parts are covered for 2 years; electronics for 1 year; and wear parts are covered for six months.

Dimensions

This model measures 59 x 26 x 68 inches and weighs 165 pounds.

User Reviews

The vast majority of Amazon reviewers have given the Schwinn 430 a rating of 4 or 5. Its overall score is also very high, meaning the product has been received well by users.

Most of the praise has been aimed at the natural and smooth stride and the overall effectiveness of the Schwinn 430 workout experience.

Any Complaints?

While some people miss fans when they are not included on elliptical trainers, it is rarely considered a make or break type of feature. In this case, Schwinn may have been wise to leave the fan off. Users report that the fan does not have enough power to provide any type of cooling breeze.

Final Recommendation

The positive reviews and relatively minor complaints show that the Schwinn 430 elliptical trainer provides a good workout experience with few drawbacks. It seems to be very fairly priced for what it can deliver. If you are under 6’ 2” and you like the inclusion of a diverse range of workout programs, this could be the ideal elliptical trainer for you.

The Body Champ BRM3671 Cardio Dual Trainer would be reasonably priced if it only functioned as an elliptical trainer, but considering it also is designed to work as an exercise bike, just like other Body Champ models, it really has a very low price. While should not expect this product to last for years and years, particularly if you plan to do some intense exercise on it, it may be able to provide you with some value in the short to mid term.

This review will take a comprehensive look at all the positives and negatives offered by the Body Champ BRM3671 Cardio Dual Trainer. Make sure you weigh both sides before laying down your hard earned money.

Stride

With its relatively short 14 inch stride length, it appears the Body Champ BRM3671 Cardio Dual Trainer is targeted more toward women or people on the shorter end of the spectrum. If you are above average height as a woman, or even average height for a male, you may find this machine to be restricting and confining. At 275 pounds, the maximum user weight is also a little on the low side compared to similar machines.

To make up for lack of stride length, the machine does provide a quiet and smooth experience. This is true in both functions — elliptical and exercise bike. Despite the fact that it is a dual function machine, the Body Champ BRM3671 Cardio Dual Trainer does deliver a level of smoothness that compares well to single function machines in this price range.

Resistance

There are eight resistance levels to cover the full range of fitness needs. Whether you are just starting and are looking for a low resistance option while you get into shape or you are already in tip-top shape and you want to be challenged, this machine can provide both.

Comfort

Comfort is not a highlight for the Body Champ BRM3671 Cardio Dual Trainer. Some users have reported that the seat is a little lacking in padding, which makes it difficult to find a comfortable position while working out. However, the seat adjusts horizontally and vertically. That should provide some users with a better chance to find the right position.

Programs and Features

The computer monitor is the main technological feature of this model. It can help you measure many of the most important factors involved in tracking fitness goals and progress. Tracked data includes distance, speed, time, calories burned, and pulse.

Assembly and Storage

Users have reported that the assembly instructions are very well written and easy to follow. You might think that a complicated dual function machine would take hours and hours to put together, but most customers have stated that it only took them around 60 to 90 minutes.

It should not be overly difficult to move or find appropriate storage for the Body Champ BRM3671 Cardio Dual Trainer.

Warranty

Backed by a one-year frame warranty and a 90 day parts warranty, the Body Champ BRM3671 Cardio Dual Trainer certainly does not have an exceptional warranty package, but it also is not worse than the average model in this price range.

Dimensions

The Body Champ BRM3671 Cardio Dual Trainer measures 38.5 x 24 x 12.7 inches and weighs 90 pounds.

User Reviews

The user reviews are mixed with positive and negative reactions. On the positive side, users like that the machine does function well as both an elliptical trainer and an exercise bike. They also appreciate how the diminutive size of this model makes it easy to assemble and store. In general, people have also reported that the low price is an advantage.

Any Complaints?

One of the main complaints is the lack of stride length. As mentioned above, it measures out at 14 inches, which is rather short for an elliptical. Some other users have reported minor squeaking and wobbling during workouts.

Final Recommendation

This is a case of “you get what you pay for,” which is so often the case with exercise equipment or everything else. There are some questions about the sturdiness and durability of this machine. As a dual function piece of equipment, that is not a shocking surprise. Still, at a little over $200, with the ability to provide a few years of effectiveness in two different categories, the Body Champ BRM3671 Cardio Dual Trainer could be a worthy investment for many. Anyone thinking about buying this model should keep the short stride length in mind. That could have a significant impact on the user experience.
